
Living up to her name and No. 1 seed, Tornado Ali Black continued her torrid run through the girls 14 & under field on Wednesday in the quarterfinals at the Junior Orange Bowl.
With a 6-0, 6-0 rout of No. 9 seed Marie Norris, Black barely broke a sweat in moving one step closer to a title. She is not, however, in uncharted territory, having won the Eddie Herr International Junior championship in the Under 16 division.
“I try to get the opponent tired,” said Black, who was forced out of action in the second round last year with a hip injury. “I’ve been working a lot on my fitness and mental game to be tougher than anyone out there.”

The premier junior tennis players in the world were on display in Plantation during the 65th annual USTA Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, Dec. 4-11. The USTA event at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center featured the top boys’ and girls’ players on the clay courts for singles and doubles competition in the 18-under and 16-under divisions.

The Doral Publix Junior Golf Classic begins Sunday, and tournament director Charlie DeLucca Jr. has many fond memories from the event’s 30-year history.
One is presenting the trophy in the 8- to 9-year-old division in 1998 to Rory McIlroy, who had just won his first tournament on U.S. soil. McIlroy of Northern Ireland is No. 2 in the world and the current U.S. Open champion. (more…)

On Monday, the company that owns Doral Golf Resort & Spa will be in the New York bankruptcy court to seek approval to put the Florida resort on the auction block.
Donald Trump’s hotel group has offered to buy the resort for $150 million, down from an initial offer of $170 million. At Monday’s hearing, the Trump group will seek permission to serve as the lead, or stalking-horse, bidder at the auction.
Hmmm, maybe South Florida is big enough for two top-level amateur golf tournaments in the same week.
The Dixie Amateur, now in its 81st year, will have a full field of 240 golfers when it begins Monday at Heron Bay Golf Club and Woodlands Country Club. (more…)
Real estate titan Donald Trump is buying the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in the Miami area for $20 million less than the price first announced in October, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.
Trump had planned to buy Doral for $170 million. But when the time for investigation lapsed in late November, his New York-based company signed a new deal, with the price cut to $150 million, Bloomberg said.
